President

Richard (Rick) Abbott became president of Tec-Com in 2014, having previously served as vice-president and secretary. He joined Tec-Com in 1988.

As president, Rick currently oversees all of Tec-Com’s research, analysis, and communications services.  For more than a quarter of a century, he has helped Tec-Com produce a variety of documents for its clients, including planning documents, white papers on energy and the economy, statistical studies, magazine and journal articles, employee and leadership surveys, and risk managment documents. He also has helped oversee Tec-Com’s contribution to selected investor communications such as annual and quarterly reports, partnership letters, corporate videos, and slide presentations. With Tec-Com as part of a client’s communications team, nine annual reports have won a “best in industry” award as part of the Nicholson Awards competition, an annual report competition sponsored by the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC). Rick also has directed the design and development of Tec-Com produced web sites since 1995.

Prior to his employment with Tec-Com, Rick worked for Handprints Design + Architecture, an award-winning architectural and graphics design firm located in Knoxville, Tennessee. While there, he received a communications design award from the East Tennessee chapters of the Society for Technical Communication and Industrial Graphics International.

In 1990, he obtained a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee, graduating in the top 7% of his class. That same year, he obtained a master of business administration degree from the university as a part of its dual J.D. / M.B.A. program. In 1986, he obtained a master of science in planning degree from the university, and in 1987, his master’s thesis on national energy planning (titled The Need for a Modular Strategy of Electric Utility Investment: Providing Adequate Generating Power During a Period of Growing Capital Needs) won a first-place national award from the American Institute of Certified Planners, the professional institute within the American Planning Association. While pursuing his planning degree, he was also awarded a Chancellor’s Citation for Professional Promise. In 1979, he graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor of architecture degree.

Rick has been a licensed attorney in the state of Tennessee since October 1990.
